Every era needs its poster boys in politics.
It has been a busy fortnight for the journalists to track down two handsome young men both named Rahul. One for good reason and other for bad reason. Both Rahuls have grown up in the glare of public scrutiny. They have lost their charismatic fathers to assassins. Both belong to elite India.
While Rahul Mahajan's stint with media ended in trajedy, Rahul Gandhi proved that he is the new darling as he steered his mother to a spectacular victory in Rae Bareily.
Beta ho to aisa, sighed every mother in the country. A few of those sighs were also for Rahul Mahajan as he walked around his father's funeral pyre in designer jeans.
Throughout the 12-day ordeal, Rahul Mahajan made sure to keep his designer shades permanently on. Though his sister fainted crying, pictures of the young man with crisp white shirt, designer jeans and perfectly gelled hair were hard to resist on cremation day.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi sweated it out in unbearable 40-degree-plus heat, equally stylishly clad in designer khadi. Both are seen as the heir apparent to the mighty political empires carved out by their respective fathers. On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi showed remarkable strategic competence when he went all out to ensure mom's victory. His handling of the media was, as always, masterly and his sister's well timed appreciation holding him responsible for the victory was apt.
But now what?????
For Rahul Gandhi, his mother has given clear indications that he will be given more responsibilities. His future seems bright (if the terrorist are not too unhappy with him).
But Rahul Mahajan's future doesn't seem to be that bright. He has been hospitalised allegedly for overdose of drugs just a day before he was supposed to immerse his father's ashes in the Brahmaputra and barely a week before being launched into active politics by BJP. Poor guy!
All the sympathy he managed to get during his father's two-week ordeal in hospital seems to have gone wasted.
Though he may be excused for having drugs (just like Fardeen Khan) but the Indian janta may not be able to excuse him for hosting a party in his house just a month after his father's tragic demise. The sympathy Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi got after their father's equally tragic demise seems to be lacking here. His stars that were blazing till two days ago seems to have lost its light. He will have to make his next move with care. Who knows how the cookie might crumble in future?
All these speculations are worth thinking over only if he manages to come hale and hearty from the ICU of Appolo Hospital.
